VAN NUYS ( — A woman in her 40s was found dead and her boyfriend injured, both with cuts to their throats, outside a Van Nuys home Tuesday.

Officers responded shortly before 7:50 a.m. to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in an alley near Kester Avenue and Lemay Street, LAPD Officer Lillian Carranza told CBS2/KCAL9’s Kara Finnstrom.

The boyfriend in his 40s told investigators he and his girlfriend were in his black pickup around 4 a.m. when they were attacked by three suspects in the alley.

The man says he passed out and woke up three hours later to find his girlfriend dead. He called police.

He was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive his injuries, including a stab wound to the neck.

“We have located what we believe to be a weapon at the scene,” Carranza said.

Officers initially reported finding a 4-year-old child at the scene but have since clarified that no child was there. The man and woman involved have several children, and officials were able to find them and make sure they were safe.

Investigators say the motive for the attacks is unclear.

Carranza said: “We’re looking at the robbery angle. We’re looking at the domestic violence angle. We’re looking at the murder-suicide angle. It’s too early in the investigation to know exactly what happened, but I am fully confident that we’ll be able to bring this investigation to a successful conclusion.”

Police are hoping the Coroner’s autopsy report shed more light on how the woman died.
