BEVERLY HILLS (CBSLA.com) — Outrage grew Monday night over controversial comments made by the designer duo Dolce & Gabbana, who criticized in vitro fertilization in an interview.

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana recently told an Italian magazine that babies conceived through IVF are “synthetic,” saying: “I call children from chemistry synthetic children.”

“It sets off an anger and an emotional that you just can’t control,” said Liz Silverman-Platt, who started Baby Steps Fertility, which helps people with IVF and fertility treatments.

Silverman-Platt told KCAL9’s Brittney Hopper she started the service after she and her husband struggled with infertility for years. They now have twin boys with help from IVF.

“They are everything to me and my husband. They are life. There’s nothing more life-like to me than my children,” she said.

In the interview with Panorama, the designer duo also stated, “We oppose gay adoptions” and “The only family is the traditional one.”

Dolce and Gabbana were once lovers.

They set off a rage on social media with John and many other celebrities calling for a boycott of their fashion line.

“How dare you refer to my beautiful children as ‘synthetic’. And shame on you for wagging your judgmental little fingers at IVF – a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfill their dream of having children,” Elton John wrote via Instagram.

John and his husband David Furnish have two sons conceived via IVF. John called their thinking “archaic” and “out of step with the times” in an Instagram post.

“If it wasn’t for IVF and surrogacy, these people would otherwise not have their families,” Silverman-Platt said.

Meanwhile, Dolce and Gabbana have said it was never their intent to judge other people’s choice and that they do believe in freedom and love.
