Oxnard Man, 22, Sentenced To 114 Years To Life For 2013 Fatal Shooting At Pico Rivera Nightclub

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com)  —   A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to 114 years to life in state prison for a fatal shooting at a Pico Rivera nightclub in 2013.

Sebastian Zazueta of Oxnard was convicted by a jury on Jan. 23 of five felonies: one count of first-degree murder and four counts of willful, deliberate and premeditated attempted murder. Jurors also found true gun allegations.

Deputy DA Brandon K. Wong said on Sept. 22, 2013, Zazueta and several of his friends went to El Rodeo to watch a singer perform.

Zazueta and his friends got into an argument with El Rodeo security guards, the prosecutor said. As a result, the group was kicked out. Later, the group bribed another doorman and were let back in, the prosecutor added.

At closing, patrons were directed to leave the club, but Zazueta wanted to re-enter to use the restroom, the prosecutor said.

The security guard refused Zazueta, at which point the defendant went to his car and retrieved a gun, according to the deputy DA.

Zazueta returned and fired several shots at the guard. He fatally struck one of the club's valets.

Melvin Cortez, then 37, was shot in the chest and died at a hospital several hours later.

The guard, Angel Guillen, then 26, was also shot several times but survived his wounds.
