Beverly Hills School Board President Arrested For Alleged Battery On 18-Year-Old
BEVERLY HILLS (CBSLA.com) — The head of the Beverly Hills school board has been arrested for an alleged battery, police said Tuesday.
KNX 1070's Ed Mertz reports Beverly Hills Unified School District President Brian Goldberg was arrested Monday night after a verbal altercation with an 18-year-old female neighbor.
Goldberg allegedly knocked the woman to the ground inside of a condominium on the 200 block of Tower Drive off Wilshire Boulevard, according to Beverly Hills Police Sgt. Max Subin.
The woman told police she made a comment to Goldberg about his unsafe driving, at which point Goldberg allegedly shoved her, causing her head to hit the inside of an elevator. The woman suffered minor injuries.
"He just started cursing at her and going all crazy, and he followed her into the elevator and pushed her a few times and bruised her back and her neck," Arya Yashar, the victim's brother, said. "She was really scared, and she feels unsafe in her own building. It's not right."
Goldberg was arrested for battery and transported to the Beverly Hills Police Department and booked "without incident", Subin said. He was released at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Goldberg, whose term on the school board expires this year, had previously said he would run for re-election.
However, he announced on Tuesday night that he would be temporarily stepping down from the post, though he maintains his innocence.
Goldberg wrote a statement, which was read at Tuesday's school board meeting.
"I am completely confident that I will be cleared of any wrongdoing. Nevertheless, I regret that this incident may cause a distraction. I thank everyone for their support and faith in me."
Goldberg claims he merely brushed up against her, though her injuries may not match up with his description of the event. Surveillance cameras are set up in the garage, but not the elevator.
His court date is set for early May.
