Deputies Recover Dress They Say Resembles Lupita Nyong'o's Oscars Gown

HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — A pearl-encrusted dress worn by actress Lupita Nyong'o during this year's Oscars show may have been found after being reported stolen this week.

West Hollywood Sheriff's Sgt. Richard Bowman says they've recovered a dress that resembles Nyong'o's gown.

Deputies said the Calvin Klein dress was taken from the actress's hotel room at the London West Hollywood sometime during the day on Feb. 25. Nyong'o' was not inside the room at the time of the theft of the dress, which is adorned with about 6,000 pearls, and valued by the manufacturer at $150,000.

It was not immediately clear whether the dress recovered was in fact Nyong'o's gown.

"Detectives will work with the owners of the dress to confirm if that is the dress," the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in an alert issued Friday.

According to the alert, deputies received a call from a media source who said they had received a call from an anonymous caller in regard to the dress.

Deputies said the dress was located on the second floor of the hotel it was reported stolen from. It was found in a black garment bag underneath a counter in an abandoned restroom that was being renovated.

"They found the dress inside of this black garment bag hidden behind a garbage bag under a counter," Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Lt. Michael White said. "We will maintain custody of the dress until we have a representative from the company or the victim show up to claim it."

Deputies said the dress was intact but some of the smaller pearls were falling off. No one has been taken into custody.

An investigation is ongoing.
