Local Attorney Recalls Landing Twin-Engine Plane After Gear Failure, Meeting Clients After

STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — Lloyd Copenbarger has been flying for 50 years, making the flight from Chino to San Jose hundreds of times.

But his flight Tuesday morning was like nothing he's ever experienced.

Speaking with CBS2/KCAL9 Tuesday via Skype from Northern California, the attorney recalled coming in for a belly landing in his Beechcraft Duke airplane.

"When I put the landing gear down, I heard a loud pop," Copenbarger said.

That pop was his landing gear failing.

Copenbarger aborted the landing, went up and around again and came in for the landing. Incredibly, no one was injured.

"During this incident, I wasn't thinking about myself," he said. "I was thinking about flying the airplane and doing my best to make sure everybody was safe and protected."

Copenbarger says emergency crews were there immediately. He credits his training and his faith for a safe landing.

"I'm a person of faith, and I believe that prayer was answered," he said.

Also on the flight were Copenbarger's brother, an attorney, as well as a paralegal for their firm.

The group continued on to meet with clients after the emergency landing.

They will fly home Wednesday on a commercial flight.
