HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — A water main break flooded streets in Hollywood early Wednesday morning.

Officials said an 18-inch pipe, which was installed in 1926, broke around 2:25 a.m. in the 6400 block of Dix Street, near the corner of Cahuenga Boulevard, the LA Department of Water and Power said.

Four cars and the basements of two apartment complexes were submerged in four to five feet of water.

“It sounded like a rain shower, and we looked outside and it wasn’t. It was just a lot of water,” said Brenda Burror, whose family’s cars were submerged. “Right now we’re trying to cancel work and school, see what we can do to fix the cars.”

Crews have managed to shut off one valve and partially shut off another.

DWP officials estimate more than 100,000 gallons of water have spilled from the pipe. Approximately 20 customers were affected and water was expected to be restored by 9 p.m.
