Poor Pooch Trapped For Days Inside Nailed-Shut Dog House On South LA Street

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A local animal rescue says its volunteers nearly cried when they came to pick up an abandoned dog Wednesday in South L.A.

The three-year-old Shepherd-Chow mix had been boarded up inside a dog house dumped on the side of the road, near 83rd Street and Grand Avenue.

"He was just cowered in the back, his head hanging down," said Alison Featherstone of Ghetto Rescue Foundation (GRF).

He would have died in there if it had not been for a passerby who ripped the wood panel off, a homeless person told a GRF volunteer.

"It's heartbreaking. The dog has been attacked. He had bite wounds on him. His leg was completely swollen, I mean, he is a broken dog," Featherstone said.

Animal control officers arrived and are treating the dog for his injuries.

Meanwhile, Featherstone says she and her fellow volunteers have come up with a name for the pooch: "Walter Worthy Higgins."

GRP plans on placing the dog in a foster home, where he'll be trained and socialized, before they try to find him a permanent home: "He is still a great dog, he's just gonna need some help."
