Fire Damages UC Riverside Human Resources Building

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — A fire damaged part of a UC Riverside building Wednesday morning, but no injuries were reported.

A fire began at about 7:25 a.m. in the attic of a UC Riverside Human Resources building on University Avenue. About 30 firefighters extinguished the fire by 8 a.m., campus spokesman Kris Lovekin said.

The building, which officials say is an "older" former hotel, must remain vacant while the damage is assessed, and a determination is made about whether the building can be reoccupied. Employees of Human Resources will be temporarily relocated, or will work from home.

"We won't be able to go back into the building until they assess the damage, so people who work in that building will be working on laptops in other places on campus, or at home," Lovekin said.

A potential damage estimate is being assessed, he said.

Emergency crews closed the Moreno Valley (215) Freeway briefly during the height of the fire, as well as surface streets immediately around the scene. The freeway and streets are now open.
