Parents In Cheer Gear Surprise Kids During Pep Rally In Whittier

WHITTIER (CBSLA.com) — Students at a high school in Whittier received a huge surprise during Thursday's pep rally with their parents taking the stage.

The moment captured in a YouTube clip shows the group of parents dressed in cheer gear performing at California High School.

The pep rally was a day before the big varsity basketball game against their rival school, La Serna High School.

Friday's game marked the final one of the season and many of the players are seniors.

Cathy Suarez, a parent, organized the performance and says the group practiced six times for a total of 12 hours.

"We decided it would be really fun. We're a family here and we thought it would be really fun together and just send them out with a bang," she told KCAL9's Brittney Hopper.

During Friday's game, the parents once again performed, but this time during halftime.

"My wife was bugging me, bugging me, bugging me so about the last two or three practices, I decided to show up," Daniel Brophy, a parent, said. "Nothing like getting out here and trying to embarrass your son."

The parents also told Hopper they wanted to teach their kids that it's not about winning or losing, but rather having fun.
