Suspect Wanted In Officer Assault Taken Into Custody After Hours-Long Stand-Off

NEWHALL (CBSLA.com) — Authorities have arrested a man wanted for assault with a deadly weapon after he barricaded himself inside a Newhall home.

SWAT teams were called and neighbors evacuated Monday night in the area around Vermont Drive and Wheeler Road as the search for Jesse Tucker, wanted in connection with a deputy-involved shooting in the Santa Clarita Valley Monday, continued more than 14 hours later.

The shooting happened around 9 a.m. in the 21000 block of Oakriver Lane in Newhall, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

Deputies were responding to a call for a stolen gardening truck when they encountered the suspects.

"When the deputies were in this area, the vehicle driven by a male occupant and had a male passenger attempted to run over the deputy," deputy Josh Dubin said.

A deputy fired his weapon, and the truck then crashed into a brick wall. The passenger and driver tried to flee the scene on foot, but the male passenger was caught.

Authorities set up a perimeter and were searching for the driver.

No deputies were injured. It was unclear if either of the suspects was wounded.

Tucker was placed under arrest shortly after 11 p.m. Monday.

Two nearby nearby schools, McGrath Elementary and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, were earlier placed on lockdown as a precaution.
