Bighorn Sheep Fatally Struck By Driver Was Able To Escape LA Zoo Through Gap In The Bushes

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A bighorn sheep that escaped from the Los Angeles Zoo in November was able to jump the zoo's fence by going through a gap in the bushes in the animal's enclosure.

The adult female was discovered in the Los Feliz section of the city about three hours after her escape, and died after being struck by a driver.

Zoo memos obtained by the Los Angeles Daily News state that after going through the "weak spot" in the enclosure, the sheep reached the second floor of the zoo's health center, then got to an elevated walkway before jumping the zoo's eight-foot fence.

Zoo director John Lewis said a fence has since been added to the area.

The sheep was the first animal to escape zoo grounds in more than a decade.
