City Councilman Doesn't Want To See Destroyed Condo Complex Rebuilt After Arson

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com)  —  A Los Angeles City Councilman said Thursday that he didn't want to see an under construction condo complex destroyed in an act of arson rebuilt.

The complex was to be home to 1,500 new condos.

The apartments were due to be occupied in several weeks. The complex burned to the ground last month.

City Councilman Tom LaBonge said he would prefer the property now become a city-owned parking facility.

He doesn't like the fact that the complex is literally inches away from the Harbor Freeway.

"That's very, very, very close," said LaBonge, "I could hug you. I would be that close to you from the lane right there next to it."

LaBonge praised the developer -- Geoff Palmer -- for creating a lot of housing in the city.

CBS2's Dave Lopez wanted to ask if the developer had plans to rebuild the condos or would he consider selling the property.

He was told Palmer doesn't respond to questions from the media.
