'Shrinking Violet' Steps Up To Win $200K Monrovia Stakes At Santa Anita
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — Shrinking Violet won the $200,000 Monrovia Stakes for older fillies and mares by 1 1/4 lengths Sunday at Santa Anita.
Ridden by Kent Desormeaux, Shrinking Violet ran 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course in 1:12.56 and paid $22.20, $12 and $7.60 at 10-1 odds.
Heat Trap returned $5.60 and $3.60, while 7-2 favorite Velvet Mesquite was another head back in third and paid $3.60 to show.
The victory, worth $120,000, increased Shrinking Violet's career earnings to $394,677, with seven wins in 16 starts. The Monrovia was her first graded stakes win. The 5-year-old mare is owned and trained by Wesley Ward.
