AlexPadilla-120x150Alex Padilla was sworn in as California Secretary of State on January 5, 2015. Padilla previously served in the California State Senate (2006-2014) where he chaired the Committee on Energy, Utilities, and Communications.  In 1999, at the age of 26, Padilla was elected to the Los Angeles City Council to represent the same east San Fernando Valley community where he grew up. In 2001, his colleagues elected him to the first of three terms as Council President, becoming the youngest member and the first Latino to serve in this capacity.  He was Acting Mayor during the tragedy of September 11, 2001. He assisted in the interview and selection of William Bratton as Chief of Police and helped negotiate the approval of LA Live and the modernization of Los Angeles International Airport.

 

Jan-Perry-[120x150]Jan Perry is the General Manager of the Los Angeles Economic and Workforce Development Department (EWDD). Mayor Garcetti appointed her to the position in 2013. Both Perry and the Mayor share a passion for job creation and the revitalization of neighborhoods that results in improving the quality of life for all Angelenos. As General Manager of the Economic and Workforce Development Department, Ms. Perry leads a staff of 175, some in economic development charged with brokering city loans, and bonds. On the workforce side, the department oversees 17 WorkSource centers for adults that offer specialized training, and career development services. In addition, the department administers 16 YouthSource centers that focus on career exploration, tutoring and computer skills, college prep and work readiness skills. The EWDD was created in 2013 with a goal to spur business activity that creates jobs and a strong tax base. Ms. Perry is the former Los Angeles City Councilmember for the 9th district, which included Bunker Hill, Little Tokyo and South Los Angeles.

 

Gary-Alexander-[120x150]Gary Alexander is a visionary, businessman and motivator. He has developed, built and managed a number of successful companies over the last 25 years. His track record includes a number of successful companies including nationally known Improv Comedy Traffic Safety Schools. He is also a known an industry pioneer in “edutainment” which brings the element of entertainment to what can be a dry and ineffective learning process.  Gary has served 14 terms as a board member of the L.A. chapter of the Entrepreneur Organization, where he currently serves as President of the Board.

He retired from the international law firm of Latham & Watkins LLP in January of 2015 to become the Senior Advisor to California State Senator Bob Hertzberg. In 2014, Fleming was the recipient of LA’s Civic Medal of Honor, given once each year to a citizen of Los Angeles for a lifetime of civic achievement.  He has been chairman of the board of the LA Area  Chamber of Commerce, the LA County Business Federation (BizFed, which he founded), the  Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation, the Southern California Leadership Council, the Valley Industry and Commerce Association (VICA) and others.

 
Olga-Mizrahi[120x150]Olga Mizrahi blogs for business at ChunkofChange.com. She is a national speaker, a  Long Beach business owner and a small business columnist for The Long Beach Post. Her new book, “Sell Local. Think Global.” premiered as a hot #1 Amazon release in three categories. She has recently been featured in Forbes, Fast Company, Inc. Magazine, and Investor’s Business Daily.  Mrs. Mizrahi evolved into the “marketing message expert” she’s become as a result of having worked as a change agent in the corporate world (working at PIMCO and Dole), in academia (teaching at UC Irvine, extension), through her own ecommerce and marketing firm (running ohso! design) and on advisory boards (assisting the Interactive Advisory Board of PBS SoCal).

 

Victor-Parker-120x150Victor Parker was appointed the District Director of the SBA’s Los Angeles District Office in October, 2011. The Los Angeles District Office serves Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara counties. As District Director, he is responsible for the management of SBA programs and services to aspiring and existing small business owners, SBA lenders and partners, which include business advisory services, capital access programs, entrepreneurial development, international trade development and contract procurement assistance. The Los Angeles District Office territory includes eight Small Business Development Centers, three SCORE and four Women’s Business Centers. Prior to joining the SBA, Victor worked in various capacities as a small business manager and corporate executive for nearly 20 years.

 

ChristopherThornberg[120x150]Christopher Thornberg is Founding Partner of Beacon Economics, LLC and widely considered to be one of the nation’s leading economists. An expert in economic forecasting, regional economics, labor markets, economic policy, and industry and real estate analysis, he was one of the earliest and most adamant predictors of the sub-prime mortgage market collapse and of the global economic recession that followed. In 2015, Dr. Thornberg was named to California State Treasurer John Chiang’s Council of Economic Advisors. He also serves on the advisory boards of Paulson & Co. Inc., one of Wall Street’s leading hedge funds, and of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, Southern California’s largest not-for-profit business federation. Between 2008 and 2012 he served as a chief economic advisor to the California State Controller’s Office and was Chair of then State Controller John Chiang’s Council of Economic Advisors. Dr. Thornberg holds a Ph.D in Business Economics from The Anderson School at UCLA, and a B.S. degree in Business Administration from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
