LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say two officers who were shot at in South Los Angeles weren’t being targeted but inadvertently drove into a suspected gang shootout.

The incident unfolded near Hoover Street and Gage Avenue and prompted a citywide tactical alert in search of two men on foot accused of firing on rival gang members traveling in a car, authorities said.

The officers returned fire but no one was hurt.

One of the two suspects, identified by authorities as 18-year-old Christopher Taylor, was captured.

He is expected to be arraigned on several charges, including assault on a peace officer with a semi-automatic firearm.

The complaint includes gun and gang allegations, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office said in a written statement.

It remains unclear whether a second suspect was apprehended.

If convicted as charged, Taylor faces up to life in prison. The statement said prosecutors are expected to ask that Taylor’s bail be set at $2 million.

The case remains under investigation.
