Christmas Tree Recycling Program Helps Fish In Riverside County

MORENO VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — With Christmas over, officials are reminding residents of the importance of properly disposing of their trees.

Trees disposed of at three locations in Riverside County will be handed over to the state Department of Fish and Game where they will be dropped into local lakes and waterways.

Officials say the trees will be used by small fish as a hiding place from much larger and hungrier fish.

"Whatever you do, other than putting it in your trash and letting it go to landfill, anything is better than filling our landfills," said Oscar Ohnesorgen of B.P. John Recycling, Inc.

To go green, all decorations, lights, tinsel and tree stands must be removed.

Trees then may be dropped off at the following landfills:

• Badlands, located at 31125 Ironwood Avenue, in Moreno Valley;
• Lamb Canyon, located at 16411 Lamb Canyon Road, in Beaumont;
• Blythe Landfill, located at 1000 Midland Road, in Blythe.

Meanwhile, the county said trees dropped into home recycling bins will be turned into mulch.
