Neighbor Detained In Stabbing Death Of Arleta Man; Police Seek 2 Additional Suspects

ARLETA (CBSLA.com) — Police have detained one of three suspects in the early Sunday morning stabbing death of a 37-year-old Arleta man.

The man, who was identified by the coroner's office as Edgar Adolfo Barrientos, was stabbed multiple times after a fight about a disturbance in the neighborhood near Beachy Avenue and Tonopah Street escalated.

Barrientos later died at Holy Cross Hospital, according to a news release issued by the Los Angeles Police Department.

"One description was that someone was doing donuts in the street, screeching tires," LAPD Lt. Paul Vernon, the commanding officer of the Mission Detective Division, says in the release. "But no one called police right away."

The release states that Barrientos and a neighbor, who lives across the street, went outside to investigate. They were confronted by the driver and a passenger in a silver Honda Accord.

The owner of the Honda, also a neighbor of Barrientos, was sitting in the backseat.

The driver, who was armed with a knife, and both passengers began to beat on the first neighbor in the street until the other neighbor appeared to come to his aid, the release states. At least two of the men then attacked that neighbor until he retreated into his home. They then attacked Barrientos again, stabbing him multiple times.

Two of the suspects then fled in the car, while its owner was left behind, the release states. Police detained the 22-year-old man in his home, and are searching for the other two suspects, who they believe to be friends of the man in custody.

Officers explained the man in custody has gang ties. Due to that connection, and the fact there is graffiti in the area, leads them to believe there is more regarding what led to this dispute.

Both suspects appear to be Hispanic and in their 20s. One of the men is tall, with a beard, and was armed with a gun, while the smaller man had the knife, officials explained.

"We have yet to identify the two outstanding suspects, apparently friends of the man we detained," Lt. Vernon said. "We'll get to the bottom of it soon, but in the meantime, if anyone has information about this incident we'd like them to call."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Gene Parshall  of the Mission Homicide Unit, at 818-838-9954. Callers can also leave anonymous tips at Crimestoppers, 800-222-TIPS (8477).
