Coroner: 'Slain Bell Gardens Mayor Suffered 3 Gunshot Wounds To Right Chest'
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Autopsy results were released on Friday for the former Bell Gardens Mayor who was fatally shot by his wife.
According to the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office, Daniel Crespo, 42, succumbed to three gunshot wounds to his right chest.
Around 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 30, Crespo was shot multiple times by his wife after being involved in a dispute regarding his infidelity at their home located in the 6300 block of Gage Avenue in Bell Gardens.
A nine millimeter weapon and three expended cartridges were recovered at the scene, deputies explained.
Deputies explained he was transported to St. Francis Medical Center, where he underwent trauma surgery, and was later pronounced dead.
The coroner's office explained they received report of his death at 5:34 p.m., and positively identified him through fingerprints.
According to the Los Angeles County Sherrif's Department, his wife, Levette, was detained by officers, but was not arrested as she claimed self-defense in the shooting.
His brother demanded Levette be brought to trial for murder as her facts do not match with the coroner's autopsy report to what happened two months ago.
Crespo's daughter explained to officials that he was verbally and physically abusive for over 20 years to her mother.
She said her parents weren't sleeping in the same room, and Crespo was known to drag Levette by the hair to force her to sleep with him. When she didn't comply, he would cause injuries that weren't serious enough to draw attention for reports to be filed.
In addition to the gunshot wounds, Crespo had abrasions to his chest and neck, and bruising on his left inner arm and right hand, authorities explained.
