Information Security Analysts Are Powerful Forces In L.A.

Spurred by an increase in the frequency of sophisticated cyber attacks, the number of new job openings for information security analysts is projected to skyrocket by 37 percent in coming years. This will place more than 27,000 additional specialists in positions of power to help companies prevent criminals from stealing classified information and creating chaos on computer networks.

In greater Los Angeles, top analysts earn an average annual salary in excess of $77,000, according to current employment data. It is a demanding vocation that is becoming more necessary by the day.

"Information security is vital at all levels of business," said Mike Gardner, director of operations at Computer Solutions Group, Inc., a member of the U.S. Secret Service Electronic Crimes Task Force. "Due to some of the recent hacks of high-profile corporations, small businesses are also under pressure to increase their security."

How is your firm helping L.A.'s business community?

"Our company provides the strategic technology backbone for thriving businesses in Los Angeles. We stay ahead of cyber attacks through proactive technology and continuing education to our end users."

Which main development has hiked your level of concern?

"The biggest trend since 2010 has been the adoption of cloud technologies. As critical business systems and data moved to the cloud, security analysts have had to move quickly to maintain security standards."

How will a security analyst's role change by 2022?

"Risk analysis will become the most important function. It's often not a question of if a security breach will occur, but when. So businesses need to plan for the worst and be prepared."

What is the best way to prepare for a sustainable career in this field?

"There are a number of strong IT certifications focused on security, including programs offered by (ISC)2 and CompTIA."

What is your message to aspiring security analysts?

"Security analysts, with a strong technical background, should get some hands-on experience. Moreover, I recommend picking a vertical, like medical or financial, and become educated on the compliance standards for that industry. Holding an industry-specific background is invaluable and strongly desired by businesses that are seeking new hires."
