1 Killed, 1 Injured In Whittier Drive-By Shooting

WHITTIER (CBSLA.com) — Detectives investigated the circumstances surrounding a drive-by shooting Sunday that killed a 26-year-old man and injured a teenager.

According to the Whittier Police Department, officers were sent shortly after midnight to the 12700 block of Lambert Road for report of a shooting with injuries.

Once on scene, officers located an adult male, Jose Duarte, and a 17-year-old female suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

A preliminary investigation revealed Duarte and the juvenile were walking Eastbound on the sidewalk when an argument occurred between Duarte and a group across the street near a local convenience store.

They continued to walk away from the location, however, the suspects proceeded to drive by and fire several shots at them.

Authorities explained Duarte was shot in the chest, and was transported to a hospital where he later died. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.

The female victim was shot in the back, but is expected to live.

At this time, it is unknown if the shooting was gang-related.

Officers explained Duarte had long gang-related ties with a local group in the area.

Detectives described the suspect vehicle as a silver or gray sedan.

The investigation is ongoing.
