Record Number Of Students Apply For UC Admission

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A plan to raise fees at the University of California system doesn't seem to be deterring prospective students and the system has again received a record number of applications for undergraduate admission.

According to preliminary data released Thursday the number of high school seniors applying for 2015 freshman admission to the University of California rose by 6.5 percent over last year.

It's the eleventh consecutive year of record applications.

Latinos remained the largest group of Californians applying for freshman admission. African American, Asian American, Latino and Pacific Islander applicants also grew.

The UC Board of Regents voted 14-7 last month to approve increases of as much as 5 percent in each of the next five years unless the state devotes more money to the 10-campus system.
