Freshman Arrested On Suspicion Of Making Threats Against O.C. School

GARDEN GROVE (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say they have arrested a 14-year-old student in connection with threats made this week against an Orange County school.

Garden Grove police said the unidentified ninth-grade student at Bolsa Grande High School was arrested on suspicion of leaving two threatening notes at the school, according to a written statement.

Police said they were dispatched to the school Tuesday afternoon in reference to a bomb threat.

The note, reportedly found by a student, indicated that a bomb was placed somewhere on campus, police said.

The threat prompted the lockdown of the school, and once officers arrived, more than 2,000 students were evacuated.

Police said it was at that time that officers conducted a search of the campus that yielded no suspicious devices.

According to authorities, a second note was located Wednesday, and according to police, made reference to both the bomb threat and a fire at the school Sunday.

The subsequent note mentioned a school shooting, according to police, who said an increased police presence was placed on campus Thursday morning.

Police further stated in a written statement that school staff reviewed both notes and thought they may have recognized the writing. An unidentified student was subsequently questioned, and officers obtained a search warrant for his home.

According to police, "numerous items of evidence were seized."

The investigation is ongoing.

Police said they were also investigating whether the student was involved in a fire at the school that gutted at least two classrooms and damaged several others.

"Teachers, staff and students supported one another and remained calm during a highly stressful time and are a model for everyone in the district," Garden Grove Unified School District Superintendent Gabriela Mafi said in a statement.

Mafi added: "We are also thankful for our wonderful, collaborative relationships with the Garden Grove Police Department and the Garden Grove Fire Department; we could not have gotten through this without their continual support."
