Pedestrian Fatally Struck, Driver Ejected At High School In Irvine

IRVINE (CBSLA.com) — A female pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle Wednesday outside an Orange County high school.

The accident happened around 11:00 a.m. near Beckman High School, located in the 3500 block of Bryan Avenue in Irvine, police said.

The sedan's driver struck the woman while she was standing on the sidewalk at the corner of Bryan Avenue and Patriot Way. She died at the scene.

The impact was so fierce that the sedan plowed through a campus fence, down a hill near the campus football field, and the 27-year-old man driving was ejected from the vehicle.

He was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Officials said he was an Irvine resident.

Classes were in session at the time but no students were involved.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the accident.

The pedestrian had no ties to the school, according to police. Fire officials say she was in her 30s or 40s. They suspect, by the pink and black running shoes she was wearing, that she may have been out for a run or walk.
