Dodgers, Barney Agree To 1-Year Contract
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Infielder Darwin Barney has agreed to a $2,525,000, one-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers that avoided salary arbitration.
Los Angeles also offered contracts to seven other arbitration-eligible players Tuesday night, including catcher A.J. Ellis, second baseman Dee Gordon and closer Kenley Jansen.
Barney's new deal includes a potential $175,000 in performance bonuses: $25,000 each for 250, 275, 300, 325, 350, 375 and 400 plate appearances. He made 242 plate appearances last season with the Cubs and the Dodgers, who acquired him in late July. Barney made $2.3 million.
The Dodgers offered a contract to Ellis despite a dismal offensive season for their starting catcher.
Los Angeles also offered contracts to catcher Drew Butera, utility player Justin Turner and two newly acquired players: outfielder Chris Heisey and right-hander Juan Nicasio.
