Teen Skateboarder Fatally Hit By SUV In Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST (CBSLA.com) — A 16-year-old boy was killed Monday when he was hit by a car while trying to retrieve his skateboard from the middle of an Orange County street, officials said.

David Valerio, of Mission Viejo, was hit near Trabuco Road and Cherry Avenue around 6:20 p.m. in Lake Forest, the sheriff's department said.

Police said the boy and a friend were riding their skateboards on the sidewalk when they lost control of the boards.

The unidentified teen was hit by an Acura SUV when "when it collided with the Valerio as he retrieved his skateboard from lanes of traffic," Lt. Jeff Hallock said.

He was taken to a local hospital where he died, officials said.

The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and was not arrested.

"It does not appear drugs and/or alcohol were a factor on the part of the driver," Lt. Hallock said.

Anyone with additional information or who witnessed the collision should call the Orange County Sheriff's Department at (714) 647-7000 or (949) 425-1860.
