Man, 27, Pleads Not Guilty To Killing Friend's Dog In Long Beach

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com)   —  Authorities said a 27-year-old man accused of fatally kicking his friend's dog down a flight of stairs pleaded not guilty in court Friday.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced that Rubin Powell III has been charged with a felony count of cruelty to an animal.

The defendant appeared before Judge Arthur Jean at the Los Angeles County Superior Court in Long Beach.

Deputy District Attorney Paul Guthrie said on Aug. 11 a witness reportedly observed Powell kick a dog, a
beagle named Sage, down a flight of stairs at an apartment building. The person then called police.

When authorities arrived at Powell's home to investigate, they discovered a dead dog. The defendant was immediately arrested in connection with the incident but was later released on $20,000 bail.

The prosecutor identified Sage as being owned by Powell's friend.

Powell is scheduled to return to court on Dec. 2 for a preliminary hearing at the Los Angeles County Superior Court in Long Beach.

If convicted, Powell faces a maximum sentence of three years in jail.
