Man Sentenced To Life Without Parole For Murder Of Good Samaritan

COMPTON (CBSLA.com) — A 33-year-old man was sentenced Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for murdering a good Samaritan who came to the aid of a woman who had just been robbed at a Lynwood meat market.

Kyle Henderson was found guilty April 23 of first-degree murder, attempted murder and second-degree robbery, with jurors finding true a special circumstance allegation that the murder was committed during a robbery.

Prosecutors say Henderson went into Crystal Produce Meat Market and robbed the female cashier at gunpoint in the late afternoon of Jan. 15, 2012. The woman fled next door to a tortilla shop and told the store's manager and one of his employees about the robbery, and they went to confront Henderson at the market, Deputy District Attorney Andrea Davalos said.

In fear for his life, the manager of the tortilla store stabbed Henderson in the neck as he left the market armed with money from the cash register and a gun. Henderson fired two rounds at the two men, with one striking the tortilla store employee in the head, according to prosecutors.

Jorge Alvarado, 43, of Lynwood, died at a hospital.

Police were notified when Henderson went to a hospital several hours later to be treated for his neck injury, Davalos said. He was arrested in connection with the deadly robbery.

Henderson was previously convicted in 1999 of second-degree robbery and in 2000 of assault on a peace officer, according to the District Attorney's Office.
