Man. 38, Allegedly Takes His Own Life After Exchanging Gunfire With Police

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com)   —  Police said a man apparently fatally shot himself in South Los Angeles after firing at officers early Sunday morning.

Officers responded to the 6600 block of Denver Avenue around 6:15 a.m. and were confronted by the suspect, who fired at them, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Norma Eisenman said.

The officers returned fire, but it was unknown if the suspect was struck, she said.

He was contained in a perimeter when a gunshot rang out, Eisenman said, adding "it appeared he took his own life."

The man --later identified as 38-year-old Calvin Williams -- was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

No officers were hurt.
