John Creech, a convicted drug dealer, was named as a person of interest in Smith's  murder in 2013. Creech is serving eight years in prison on drug charges.

Smith had reportedly met Creech's wife Chandrika while he was in rehab. Detectives believed a jealous John Creech killed Smith because he believed the two were romantically involved; the exact nature of their relationship was never established.

Smith's distraught family held many vigils and kept media attention in the case alive for more than a year.

In February 2013, Smith's car was discovered in a Simi Valley storage facility. Creech was linked to the storage unit.
