OC Father Of 8 Hopes Not Paying For College Will Push Kids To Be Entrepreneurs

LAGUNA NIGUEL (CBSLA.com) — An O.C. father of eight and successful author and speaker is proud to say he hasn't saved a penny for his children's college fund.

CBS2/KCAL9 spoke with David Fagan, author of "Guerrilla Parenting: How To Raise An Entrepreneur," on his hopes that his kids will get out in the world, discover their passion and acquire a solid work ethic.

"I'm always trying to point them in the direction where they can monetize their knowledge and experiences the most. And a lot of times that's by being a business owner or entrepreneur, not by taking the normal course of action like everybody else," the father said.

The book is now sold online and his story is making headlines.

"Guerrilla Parenting" spells out his belief that parents should teach self reliance, customize education, focus on getting results and that college is not for everyone.

"So, I found that there's a certain group of people out there who are upset, because they feel that I'm being irresponsible having so many kids and not being willing to pay for their college," Fagan said. "I think there's another group of people out there that seem to be more conservative of a group, where they want people to be more self-reliant, they want it to be more up to them to take care of themselves and be in control of their own destiny."

The money Fagan earned that could have gone toward college funds was reinvested in his own businesses.

He said that if his kids later come to him asking for money he'd expect them to make him a pitch, that would go something like, " 'I want you to make an investment in me. Just like you invest in businesses, just like venture capitalists have invested in you, I want you to invest in me. And here's why, and here's what I'm going to do, and I've done my part.'"

Fagan said: "I would listen really hard to that. I would listen really hard."
