Pomona SWAT Officer Shot In Head Is Father Of 2

PASADENA (CBSLA.com) — A Pomona police officer remained in critical condition Tuesday night after being shot in the back of the head while serving a search warrant at a San Gabriel home.

The officer, identified as Shaun Diamond, 45, is a father of two with a 16-year career in law enforcement, according to KCAL9's Crystal Cruz. He remained hospitalized at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena.

"I ask that you please keep Shaun and his family and the members of the Pomona Police Department in your thoughts and prayers," Pomona police Chief Paul Capraro said.

Diamond, a SWAT team member, was shot around 4 a.m. while serving a search warrant in San Gabriel connected to a suspected motorcycle gang.

Police detectives handling the investigation say Diamond was prying open a door when he was shot in the back of the head.

"The bullet was above the vest. Best indication right now is that he was possibly hit in the back of the head although he was wearing a Kevlar helmet," said Eddie Hernandez with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Fellow officers pulled Diamond away and say their suspect laid down, pushing his gun aside. He was arrested without incident.

Authorities aren't releasing the suspect's picture but identified him as David Martinez, 36, of San Gabriel. Authorities said Martinez was the subject of the search warrant.

Martinez was booked on suspicion of attempted murder on a peace officer.

Investigators said Martinez has a criminal history, including domestic violence and assault with a deadly weapon.
