Man To Face Trial In 2012 Shooting Death At Irvine Home

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — Trial is set to begin next week for a 23-year-old man accused of killing his father by shooting him in their Irvine home.

According to the Orange County District Attorney's Office, Steven Joseph Bruno was charged with one felony count of murder with a sentencing enhancement for the personal discharge of a firearm causing death.

If convicted, Bruno faces a maximum sentence of 50 years to life in state prison, officials said.

Police said around 9 p.m. Aug. 30, 2012, Bruno left the body of his father, Ernest Bruno, 60, in a bedroom and fleeing to Colorado in his father's car after fatally shooting him.

Family members went to the victim's house around 1:30 p.m. the following afternoon and called 911 after locating him in the locked bedroom, authorities explained.

According to the Logan County Sheriff's Department, deputies arrested Bruno around 5:30 p.m. during a traffic stop on Aug. 31, 2012, in Colorado.

Opening statements are expected to begin Tuesday in Santa Ana, the DA's Office said.
