Police: Drunk Driver Crashed Into Sheriff's Transport Van Driving Wrong-Way Onto Freeway

RIVERSIDE (AP) — Authorities say a suspected drunken driver was arrested after allegedly going the wrong way on a Riverside County freeway ramp and crashing into a sheriff's transport van.

The driver, identified as 20-year-old Sergio Garcia of Fontana, suffered major injuries and was taken to a hospital following the collision early Monday.

The California Highway Patrol says Garcia drove his 2004 Nissan into the law enforcement van at about 2:35 a.m. after entering the off-ramp of the 91 Freeway the wrong way.

None of the three occupants in the van was seriously hurt but the Riverside County Sheriff's Department says an inmate was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

The CHP says alcohol was believed to have been a factor in the wrong-way crash.
