Man Holding Elderly Relative At Sword-Point Surrenders Peacefully In Lake Elsinore Stand-Off

LAKE ELSINORE (CBSLA.com) — A 47-year-old man was in custody Sunday after allegedly holding an elderly family member at sword-point in a stand-off with SWAT members.

According to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, John Kirby was arrested Saturday for making criminal threats and assault with a deadly weapon after surrendering to officials after a six hour stand-off.

Deputies said they were sent to the 800 block of Graham Street just after 2 p.m. for reports of an assault with a deadly weapon in a home.

Once on scene, officials learned Kirby had threatened to harm a family member with a sword.

Authorities said the victim was able to escape the residence unharmed.

Kirby, however, did not allow his elderly relative to leave the home, which prompted a SWAT team to be brought to the scene for assistance after he barricaded himself inside.

SWAT team members said they convinced Kirby to release his relative and they safely escorted the unharmed relative out of the home.

Shortly after, Kirby safely surrendered peacefully to SWAT members and was taken into custody.

Officials did not clarify the victim's age.

Kirby is being held on $25,000 at the Southwest Detention Center.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact deputies at (951) 245-3300.
