Body Of Missing Diver Found Off Catalina's Emerald Bay

SANTA CATALINA ISLAND (CBSLA.com) —  Authorities believe they have recovered the body of a diver who went missing Monday evening off Santa Catalina Island.

The search for the unidentified man was officially called off Wednesday evening after more than 70 hours.

About 11:30 a.m. Thursday, members of the Sheriff's Department's Emergency Services Detail recovered a body.

The body will be taken to the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office to determine the cause of death and subsequent identification.

The investigation is ongoing.

The victim went out on a chartered boat Monday, and at some point during his dive, called out for help. He went under and was not seen again.

Emerald Bay, one of Southern California's top snorkeling and scuba diving spots, is on the west end of Santa Catalina, about 2 miles northwest of Isthmus Cove at Two Harbors.

The island is due west of Laguna Niguel, Dana Point and Mission Viejo.
