Man In Wheelchair Killed In Pacoima Hit-And-Run Is ID'd

PACOIMA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities have identified the man in a wheelchair who was killed Friday in a hit-and-run crash.

The victim, identified as 40-year-old Manuel De Jesus Segovia Gonzalez, was struck about 8 p.m. in the 13100 block of Terra Bella Street, authorities said.

Gonzalez was crossing the street in an unmarked crosswalk at the time. Detective Bill Bustos of the LAPD said Gonzalez was dragged approximately 100 feet before coming to a stop in front of his home in Pacoima.

"His loved ones came out and saw what happened," the detective said, adding that they were "horrified."

He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, officials told KNX 1070.

Officials said Gonzalez was hit possibly by a Cadillac sport utility vehicle or pickup truck. The suspect vehicle was maroon in color, according to police, and remained outstanding. Authorities said the vehicle likely sustained front-end damage.

Police said the suspect dragged Gonzalez -- a Pacoima man --  for more than 100 feet and and fled without stopping or rendering aid.

On Saturday, CBS2's Joy Benedict spoke with neighbors who said speeding is a problem in the area, and vehicles often will not stop to allow pedestrian to cross the street.

Anyone with more information on this case was asked to call the LAPD Valley Traffic Division or CRIME STOPPERS at (800) 222-TIPS.
