SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — Police Wednesday were searching for a suspect who stole a vehicle with a 1-year-old baby inside in San Bernardino.

The purple PT Cruiser was stolen outside a home in the 1500 block of 7th Street around 11:30 a.m., officials said.

The child’s grandmother had put her into the vehicle and went back into the house when the suspect allegedly jumped in and took off. When she came out, neighbors were yelling to her that a man jumped in the car and sped off.

“I ran inside. I went to get the mail key, and I see that the car was not there. I didn’t know what to do, so I called my daughter-in-law who called the police,” the girl’s grandmother, Arlene Rodriguez, said.

The vehicle was abandoned and recovered less than 20 minutes later at 9th Street and Ramona Avenue, about a half mile away from where she was taken. Neighbors reported seeing the thief take his clothes off and run away.

The baby, who officers believe slept through the incident, appeared to be in good condition, according to San Bernardino police.

“She’s doing OK. Police say she’s OK. She was asleep. So thank God she was all right,” Rodriguez said.
