Gray Whale Spotted In Marina Del Rey Harbor

MARINA DEL REY (CBSLA.com)  — A young gray whale that should be heading south for the winter has been spotted in the Marina del Rey harbor.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies first saw the large mammal around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

They said it looked like it was playing with a buoy.

The whale went under water, surfaced a short time later, then disappeared again.

Deputies said the animal looked healthy and was not in distress.

"It doesn't look injured; it doesn't look sick, just kinda like it's separated from its pod," Dep. David Schienfard said. "This is the furthest I've ever seen a whale come into the marina . . . hopefully the whale will find its way out of the marina."

Authorities asked that boaters stay away from the mammal.
