Police Warn Of Scam Involving Fake Alarm Company Employees

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — Detectives Tuesday warned the public about a scam involving suspects posing as alarm company employees who target residential neighborhoods.

According to the Riverside Police Department, on Aug. 12, a resident living in the 6700 block of Mount Whitney Avenue was contacted by a man who identified himself as an ADT employee.

He was dressed in a complete ADT Alarm Co. uniform and informed the resident he was there to perform updates on her alarm system, officials said.

Once inside, detectives said the man looked around the home for a while and proceeded to leave without working on the alarm system. It was unclear if he stole anything from the property.

Authorities learned that the same subject also contacted another resident nearby.

According to police, this resident contacted ADT and learned that no employees were sent by the company to provide services updates in the area.

Both residents did not see a vehicle associated with the man, detectives said.

The Riverside Police Department offered the following advice for those who may be contacted by fake employees:

  • Always ask to see company identification as all alarm company employees are issued identification cards.
  • Most companies do not send employees to residences without setting up an appointment.
  • Contact your alarm company before letting anyone in your home. They will be able to verify if the person is an employee on official business.

Anyone with information is urged to contact detectives at (951) 826-8716.
