MMA Fighter Accused Of Brutally Beating Girlfriend Due In Court

VENTURA (CBSLA.com/AP) — A mixed martial arts fighter accused of brutally beating his porn star girlfriend in Las Vegas and then fleeing to California is due to face a judge for the first time following his arrest last week in a Los Angeles suburb.

Jonathan Paul Koppenhaver, who fought under the name War Machine, is scheduled Tuesday afternoon in Ventura County Superior Court following his arrest Friday at a hotel in Simi Valley.

The 32-year-old Koppenhaver is accused of beating Christy Mack so badly early Aug. 8 that she feared for her life and ran naked from her house to seek help from neighbors.

Koppenhaver is due for an extradition hearing in on a fugitive warrant issued after Las Vegas authorities accused him of multiple felony battery, lewdness and coercion charges.

The U.S. Marshal's Service and officers from Simi Valley police arrested Koppenhaver about 1:45 p.m. Friday at the Extended Stay America Hotel at 2498 Stearns Street, the Associated Press reported.

Officers found a small quantity of cash, his passport and some pizza, and took Koppenhaver, a former resident of Simi Valley, into custody without further incident.

On Aug. 10, Koppenhaver took to Twitter to defend his actions, saying "I only wish that man hadn't been there and that Christy & I would be happily engaged.I don't know y I'm so cursed. One day truth will come out."

Mack released photos on Twitter showing alleged injuries she suffered in the attack, along with her account of events preceding the alleged attack.
