Bakersfield Police Make $76M Marijuana Bust

BAKERSFIELD (CBSLA.com) — A minor traffic violation put the breaks on a major marijuana operation.

More than three tons of pot, worth $76 million, that was being transported in the back of a U-Haul was seized early Wednesday morning.

According to Bakersfield police, two officers pulled the driver over for running a red light and smelled a strong odor coming from the truck.

When the officers lifted up the door, they found more than 250 bales of marijuana.

Police arrested the driver and his passenger, both of Bakersfield, on drug charges.

Authorities say the bust was the largest in recent history.
