1 Dead As Divers Search For More Victims After Boat Overturns In Pyramid Lake

CASTAIC (CBSLA.com) — One man is confirmed dead and divers are looking for more victims after a boat overturned Sunday in Pyramid Lake.

L.A. County Fire says they were called at 11:40 a.m. to an area of the lake near Vista Del Lago Road, 16 miles north of Castaic.

Rick Tanovan, 52, of West Covina, was pronounced dead at the scene.

It's unclear how many people were on the boat at the time of the accident.

Pyramid Lake is a popular destination for boaters about 60 miles north of downtown Los Angeles in the Angeles National Forest.

A jet skier alerted authorities about a boat in trouble. The boat reportedly capsized in water about 8 feet deep.

Officials said items consistent with an overturned boat -- like a backpack, cooler and cell phone -- were found near the Tanovan's body.

The victim's cell phone was working after being submerged in water for more than an hour, CBS2's Art Barron reported.

The last call made on the phone was at 10:33 a.m. Sunday morning.

The search for additional possible victims was called off at nightfall due to lack of light and heavy vegetation in the water making it next to impossible to see.

The search was scheduled to resume at 8 a.m. Monday.
