Prom Bus Was Operating Illegally When OC Girl Fell Out Window

NEWPORT BEACH (AP) — State regulators say a party bus that an Orange County teenager fell out of on her way to prom was operating illegally.

The Los Angeles Times reports Wednesday that the California Public Utilities commission sent a cease-and-desist letter to Downey's Leon Party Bus in 2012 for operating buses without a license, but it apparently continued even after its application for a license was denied in 2013.

The Orange County Register reports that 59 Corona del Mar High School students were on the bus Saturday when 17-year-old Charlotte Boyse fell through a window that gave way and on to the freeway. She was not seriously hurt.

The California Highway Patrol said the window hinges were working properly, but likely weren't latched.

The CHP and the state are still investigating and it's not clear what sanctions the company may face.

The bus company could not be reached for comment.
