Angelenos Surrender 950 Firearms During City's Annual Gun Buyback

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Mayor Eric Garcetti and LAPD Chief Charlie Beck announced Monday that 950 firearms were surrendered during the city's annual Gun Buyback program, which took place over the weekend.

In total, 476 handguns, 273 rifles, 170 shotguns, and 31 assault weapons were collected at four locations citywide.

Since its inception in 2009, the program has removed nearly 13,000 guns from LA streets.

"This isn't about the right to own guns, its about the need to get rid of guns that serve no useful purpose," Chief Beck said.

In exchange for weapons, participants received Ralph's gift cards ranging from $100 to $200, depending on the type of gun.

CBS2 and KCAL9 were proud media sponsors of the event.
