An officer initiated a traffic stop and one of the drivers, identified as Darnell White III, exited a vehicle with a fully loaded assault rifle in his hand.

“The officer believed he was about to be fired upon and fired multiple rounds at the suspect,” Sgt. David Shepherd said.

White left the weapon in the vehicle and ran to a nearby residence.

The home was later cleared by the Inland Valley SWAT Team after a search revealed that White had fled.
