WHITTIER (CBSLA.com) — A man was electrocuted early Thursday morning in his Whittier backyard.

The accident happened just before 3 a.m. in the 6400 block of Danby Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The male victim, 47, heard a loud boom in the backyard and saw flashing lights before going to investigate.

Upon going outside, he made contact with a downed power line and was electrocuted, officials said.

“He was a very, very strong hard-working man,” neighbor Moises Duran, whose home suffered fire damage in the incident, said. “It’s sad that this happened today.”

The victim’s identity has not been released.

“We wish to extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families at this difficult time,” Southern California Edison said in a statement.

Approximately 2,840 customers were without power due to the incident.
