Edison Offers Discount For Remote Access To Cut A/C Power During 'Energy Events'

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Southern California Edison is offering customers up to $200 in bill credits in exchange for giving the utility remote access to their air conditioning (A/C) compressor on a temporary basis.

Under the Summer Discount Plan, residential and business customers can save by voluntarily allowing Edison to shut down their A/C for up to 6 hours a day during so-called "energy events", which occur during periods of high electricity demand or emergencies, according to officials.

Participating customers can choose from four different levels of participation, including an "override" option which allows for customers to opt out of up to 5 energy event days a year, Edison said.

Participants can also decide between the "Maximum Savings" (100 percent cycling) and "Maximum Comfort" (50 percent cycling) options.

Customers who wish to be eligible for the Summer Discount Plan must have a central A/C system in good working order throughout their participation in the program, which requires a commitment of at least one year, with some exceptions allowed for medical reasons, officials said.

Any tenants who wish to participate must determine whether the property owner or manager's approval is required for the installation and operation of the cycling device, and are responsible for obtaining this approval prior to applying.
