Toddler Gravely Injured In San Bernardino Hit-And-Run

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Monday were searching for a hit-and-run driver who gravely injured a 2-year-old girl over the weekend.

The accident happened Sunday evening in the 2400 block of N. Mountain View Avenue in San Bernardino.

According to police, the victim, identified as Asianae Thomas, was struck by a vehicle after she wandered into the street during a birthday party.

The suspect fled the scene following the collision.

"The child was subsequently transported by family members to a nearby hospital," Lt. Richard Lawhead said.

"We saw blood pouring from her ear. I saw her eyes, and her eyes were lifeless, like it was nothing. We tried to stay hopeful, and she went to the hospital yesterday. We were all still here, praying," the victim's cousin, Andrea Crosby, said.

Officers were unable to find much evidence at the scene.

"So far police have been unable to locate anyone who can provide the necessary information needed to identify a suspect or a vehicle involved in this tragic event," Lawhead added.

Family and friends meanwhile kept vigil at the home where the collision occurred Monday night.

The victim's cousin, Felicia Windom Jones, recalled how quickly the tragedy unfolded.

"We turned our backs for a second. It just happened so fast," she said. "I saw my cousin holding her baby in her arms and she was just lifeless."

The family told KCAL9's Andrea Fujii they believe this was an accident. But they don't understand how the driver didn't stop.

"I can't understand it. It was an accident, it wasn't his fault. The baby ran in the street. Maybe he didn't see her," the victim's great aunt, Dorothy Windom, said.

Now they say they have no closure as Asianae remained on life support on Monday night, and was not expected to survive.

"When you leave the scene of an accident and leave somebody there to die that's heartless," Crosby said.

Police say they have no suspects.

Anyone with information should contact the San Bernardino Police Department at (909) 384-5664.
