Cinco De Mayo Festivities Take Place In Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Cinco de Mayo celebrations were being held Monday in Los Angeles.

The 84th annual Cinco de Mayo Festival at Olvera Street was taking place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The event included two music stages, carnival rides, games, giveaways and more.

The 39th annual Cinco de Mayo Fiesta in Carson will take place from noon to 5 p.m. at the recently renovated Carson Park.

Monterey Park will hold its 32nd annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Barnes Park Amphitheater including performances by local and regional performers, authentic Mexican food and raffle drawings.

The Grande Cinco de Mayo Block Party will be held from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the corner of El Tovar Place and Robertson Boulevard in West Hollywood. Proceeds from the event will benefit Project Angel Food, a nonprofit organization that provides free and nutritious meals to those affected by HIV/AIDS.

Police said DUI checkpoints and special driving-under-the-influence saturation patrols will be conducted throughout the evening. The public is advised to designate a sober driver before festivities begin, report drunk drivers by calling 911 and take the keys away from people who are too impaired to be behind a wheel.

Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, commemorating Mexico's army being victorious over a larger, well-equipped French expeditionary force at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.
